Lucia Specia, Professor of Language Engineering and Deputy Head of Research at\u00a0the Department of Computer Science, \u00a0Sheffield University, gave a speech titled “Machine Translation: Modern Approaches and their Use in Real World Scenarios”<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the first part of her talk, we were shown glimpses of future developments, especially with Neural Machine Translation as is being tested by\u00a0Google. Just then were we brought back to earth, with a survey of MT solutions for\u00a0real world scenarios.\u00a0Lucia\u00a0presented a series of success stories in the use of MT by companies and institutions (Autodesk, the European Commission, Intel and Skype Translator).
\nAlthough translators are known to\u00a0hate MT\u00a0rather than love it, it\u00a0is generally acknowledged\u00a0to be a\u00a0typing aid and a source of inspiration – or even a\u00a0means to move away from our own idiolect, as Michael Farrell suggested during the questions\/comments session at the end of Lucia’s talk!<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
